Creamer and Phillips Admitted to U.S. Tax Court
Blanco Tackabery attorneys Jim Creamer and Matthew Phillips, both of whom practice in the Estate Planning and Taxation groups in the firm's Winston-Salem and Lake Norman offices, were admitted in late December 2007 to the bar of the United States Tax Court.
The Tax Court, which is located in Washington, DC, but sends judges to hearings in locations around the country, including Winston-Salem, is one of the courts to which decisions by the Internal Revenue Service can be appealed. While lawyers can bring cases on behalf of clients through the federal district court system, the Tax Court offers two main advantages: judges have deep experience in tax controversies and taxpayers may petition in Tax Court without first paying the tax claimed due by the IRS.
Attorneys in the firm's Taxation Group represent clients with respect to all tax issues before the IRS, the North Carolina Department of Revenue and in state and federal courts by protesting tax assessments, obtaining rulings, negotiating settlements and conducting litigation.
