Ashley practices in the areas of creditors' rights, workouts, and commercial litigation, with a focus on commercial bankruptcy and insolvency. Her representation includes banks, trade vendors, reclamation creditors, preference defendants, bankruptcy trustees, lessors, lessees, and creditors' committees. Ashley also represents Chapter 7 and 11 Trustees, Debtors-in-Possession and equity interest holders of Debtors-in-Possession. Ashley has represented clients in bankruptcy cases in Delaware, Florida, South Carolina, Georgia, Arizona and Texas, as well as every federal district of North Carolina. Ashley is admitted to the bar in both North Carolina and Georgia.

Ashley gained a considerable amount of her experience in this practice area during three federal judicial clerkships. She first served as a law clerk to the Honorable Jerry G. Tart, U.S. Bankruptcy Judge for the Middle District of North Carolina, 1987-1989. Her second and third judicial clerkships were served in Atlanta, Georgia with the Honorable Margaret H. Murphy and then with the Honorable James E. Massey, U.S. Bankruptcy Judges for the Northern District of Georgia, Atlanta Division, 1993-1995. Upon completion of her bankruptcy clerkships in Atlanta, Ashley served as Litigation Counsel in the Legal Department of Fleet Finance, Inc., a consumer finance subsidiary of Fleet Bank, Boston.

Ashley is on the Board of Directors of the Middle District Bankruptcy Institute, and has served the North Carolina Bar Association Bankruptcy Section in several capacities, including Vice-Chair and Chair of the Section's CLE Committee, and two terms on the Section's Executive Council from 1991-1993 and 2002-2005. Ashley is a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute, the Risk Management Association, the Turnaround Management Association, and the International Women's Insolvency and Restructuring Confederation, for which she is a member of the Board of Directors of the Carolinas Chapter. She has also served as Chapter Editor for the North Carolina Bankruptcy Practice Manual, Fifth Edition (2003) and Sixth Edition (2006).

Ashley and her husband, Derwood, have three children. She is involved in the community and is a member of the Class of 2010 of Leadership Winston-Salem. Ashley has been Chair and Vice-Chair of the Board of Directors for Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Forsyth County and Chair and Vice-Chair of the Advisory Board for the Center for Home Ownership. She is a Co-Chair for the Mad Hatter's Party, a fundraising event to support the Winston-Salem Youth Chorus. Ashley is a volunteer with Girl Scouts of America.
